External Examiners

Academic Services

Location:  Multiple Campuses
Closing Date:  Open until filled
Reference:  122016-567

External Examiners play a pivotal role in quality assuring programmes for our students.  We are seeking to build a bank of potential External Examiners to deploy as business need dictates across our range of courses.

The tenure of appointments is for a period of four years. All External Examiner appointments are subject to approval by the University Academic Board.

Role Requirements:

-         Comment on the content of the subject area particularly with regard to subject benchmarks

-         Examine assessment briefs, exam papers and student work  to ensure academic standards and achievements of students are comparable with those in other UK higher education establishments of which the external examiner has experience

-         Provide informative comment and recommendations on whether the assessment process measures student achievement rigorously and fairly against the intended outcomes of the programme/s and is conducted in line with the relevant policies and regulations

-         Attend examination board/s and submit an annual report

-         Engage in communication with the academics and academic services teams

Please note that External Examiners are required to engage with assessment of both theory and practice elements of the programme where relevant.  Ideally, External Examiners will be able to examine across both the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes.

Previous experience as an External Examiner is not necessary as the University is able to provide mentorship to the successful applicants.

If you would like to register your interest, please apply here or for further information about the role please email felicity.morley@bcu.ac.uk

Our standard fee for External Examiners is £450 per academic year. We also offer an additional fee for visits made to BCU for purposes other than to attend exam boards.

Please note that we try and appointment new External Examiners 12 months before their tenure is due to begin.

Birmingham City University holds an Athena Swan Bronze Award and promotes the advancement of gender equality through Representation, Progression and Success for All. We are an equal opportunities employer and welcome applications from all sections of the community.

Applications from job seekers who require Tier 2 sponsorship to work in the UK are welcome and will be considered alongside all other applications. However, non-EEA candidates may not be appointed to a post if a suitably qualified, experienced and skilled EU/EEA candidate is available to take up the post as the employing body is unlikely, in these circumstances, to satisfy the Resident Labour Market Test. The UK Visas and Immigration department requires employers to complete this test to show that no suitably qualified EEA or EU worker can fill the post. For further information please visit the UK Visas and Immigration website.
