Research Assistant - Wireless Networks (fixed term until 31/03/2022)

A research position is now available to work on 5G Connected Forest, a new 5G testbed project funded by the UK Government. The project will develop and evaluate new sensor technologies over 5G networks in forest environments, leveraging unmanned vehicles such as robots and drones. 

We invite applicants who have (or are expected to obtain) a first or upper second class degree in Computer Science or Networking or other relevant technical disciplines to join our diverse and dynamic research team. The applicants must be able to show a good understanding of networking principles and knowledge of Linux based systems. We also welcome applicants with familiarity in software defined radio (SDR) and experience in hardware and software development. Experience in network application programming and cloud computing is an advantage. We will also value the ability to learn new technologies outside your current skills and expertise. The role will also require you to collaborate effectively with external stakeholders including industry partners, and other team members. Interpersonal skills will be essential for this role. Main Duties & Responsibilities

  • Carry out research work, design and development of wireless systems the team is responsible for. 

  • Contribute to proposal and realisation of hardware and software solutions to problems

  • Contribute to project deliverables and reports, describing and reflecting on progress and results

  • Contribute to publication of research findings in high quality international Journals & Conferences.

  • Collaborate with project partners to achieve the common aims of the project.

  • Carry out any other duties appropriate to the position, and as directed by the project lead.

Skills and Experience

Essential Skills

  • Hold (or expected to obtain) a first or upper class degree in Computer Science or Networking or a related technical subject.
  • Have a firm grounding in wireless communications and networking (including the design, development and evaluation of network-based systems using simulation tools and/or testbeds).
  • Have strong software development skills in Linux and excellent programming skills in Python.
  • Able to meet deadlines and prioritise workload.
  • Possess excellent communication skills and collaborative attitude. 

Desirable Skills

  • Possess familiarity with USRP Software Defined Radios (SDR) and relevant software such as GNU.
  • Able to work independently and to assist with the technical project management duties.
  • Keen to develop new skills and gain experience at a rapid pace.
