The Disability Support Team provides advice, information and support to disabled applicants and students, and works with faculties and professional services to provide an accessible and inclusive environment. We are seeking a Senior Disability Adviser to join our friendly and dedicated team to line manage four Disability Advisers, support them and other colleagues with complex cases, carry your own caseload, and deliver training and consultancy on access, inclusion and the Equality Act 2010 to colleagues across the University.

Line-managing four Disability Advisers, the successful candidate will support advisers in managing increasingly complex cases, whilst managing your own caseload, and developing your role, and that of the Disability Advisers, to deliver training and guidance to colleagues across the University on inclusive teaching and assessment. You will play a key role in the Disability Support Team’s contribution to inclusive practice and our drive to increase the number of students accessing disability support. You will be an experienced line manager, and have extensive experience of disability support in higher education, managing complex cases, detailed knowledge of the Equality Act 2010 and the confidence to apply all this to complex situations.

There will be an opportunity for hybrid working with a mixture of campus-based and home-based working for some of the time.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

The Senior Disability Adviser will: 

  • Line-manage four Disability Advisers 
  • Manage a personal caseload  
  • Provide advice, information, guidance and support to colleagues in the Disability and Wellbeing Teams on supporting disabled students and applicants with complex difficulties  
  • Provide advice, information, guidance and support to prospective and current disabled students and / or specific learning difficulties on support available within the University and externally (such as Disabled Students’ Allowances).  
  • Provide advice, information and guidance to staff across the University as required to facilitate learning support for prospective and current disabled students, which may include contributing to Reasonable Adjustment Panels 
  • Work closely with managers in the decision-making around complex support packages and reasonable adjustments for disabled students and applicants 

Skills and Experience Required


  • Educated to degree level or equivalent 
  • Substantial experience of assessing need and delivering support for disabled individuals  
  • Sound understanding of disability issues, as well as up-to-date knowledge of the legal framework including the Equality Act 2010 and other relevant legislation  
  • Significant experience and in-depth knowledge of Disabled Students’ Allowances, the related 
  • Study Needs Assessment process and the Disabled Students’ Allowances Quality Assurance Framework   
  • Experience of managing a significant caseload and accurate record-keeping  
  • Experience of managing staff  
  • Experience of providing customer-facing services  
  • Knowledge of enabling technology and software programmes helpful for disabled students  
  • Knowledge and understanding of study support for disabled students  
  • Ability to work co-operatively across the University and with external organisations  
  • Ability to work in a student-centred way  
  • Ability and willingness to consider new ways of working and to apply new technology  
  • Ability to apply legal information to complex decision-making  
  • Ability to apply the University’s regulations and policies holistically to a student’s circumstances, in order to provide advice or make complex decisions,  
  • Understanding of confidentiality / data protection issues  
  •  Ability to work flexibly and be highly responsive when time is of the essence  
  •  Strong organisational and administrative skills  
  •  Excellent written and oral communication skills  
  •  Excellent interpersonal and presentational skills  
  •  Excellent IT skills including MS Office suite, email / internet  
  •  Experience of assessing need and providing support within Further or Higher Education 
  •  Experience of developing and delivering awareness-raising activities  
  •  Knowledge of general student support-related policies and practices  


  •  British Sign Language Level 3 is desirable 

The Disability Support Team at Birmingham City University sits within Quality Enhancement and Inclusion. This is a new approach to disability support and is intended to help ensure that accessibility becomes an integral part of the design and delivery of courses. The successful candidate will be part of a team of 17 professionals providing a high quality service to disabled applicants, students and colleagues across the University.
