The Disability Support Team provides advice, information and support to disabled applicants and students, and works with faculties and professional services to provide an accessible and inclusive environment. We are seeking a Disability Adviser to join our friendly and dedicated team, to provide advice and practical support for prospective and current disabled students including the assessment and implementation of support needs, at all University campuses. You will also provide advice and consultancy to colleagues across the University on inclusive practice and reasonable adjustments, and deliver training to colleagues on these subjects. The role will suit a person with a strong interest in disability and equality in the higher education sector, with experience of assessing the support needs of disabled adults and implementing support packages.

As part of a team of 16 colleagues, you will report to the Senior Disability Adviser, along with the other two Disability Advisers in the team. You will provide advice and information to disabled students and applicants, assess support needs, implement support packages, assist with applications for Disabled Students' Allowances, represent the team at student recruitment events and liaise with disabled students' support workers and with external stakeholders, such as funding bodies and needs assessors. You will also provide advice and consultancy to colleagues across the university, and deliver training to them on disability support processes and inclusive practice. 

You will play an important part in helping the team achieve the University's target of increasing disability declaration numbers by 1% each academic year. 

The primary responsibilities of this role are: 

  • Manage a caseload and communicate with other student support staff to provide advice, information, guidance and support to prospective and current disabled students and / or specific learning difficulties on the provision of support services and facilities available within the University. 
  • Provide advice, information and guidance to staff from all areas within the University as required to facilitate learning support for prospective and current disabled students.
  • Facilitate and help monitor student applications for Disabled Students’ Allowance and other funding sources, liaising with relevant internal staff and external organisations.
  • In conjunction with student support staff, promote good practice across the University in the provision of inclusive teaching and assessment and be involved with the delivery of staff training and awareness raising activities.
  • Attend and participate in relevant internal and external meetings as required and be a member of the National Association of Disability Practitioners (NADP) and other appropriate professional organisations.
  • Ensure your professional practice reflects the requirements of the NADP Code of Practice for members.

The key requirements of the role are: 

  • Educated to degree level or equivalent
  • Significant experience of assessing need and providing advice and one-to-one support to disabled adults within a professional setting is essential
  • Experience of managing a significant caseload and accurate record keeping is essential
  • Experience of providing customer-facing services is essential
  • Previous disability awareness / equality training is essential
  • Knowledge of enabling technology and software programmes helpful for disabled people with disabilities is desirable
  • Knowledge and understanding of study support for disabled students is essential
  • Knowledge of current disability legislation is essential 
  • Knowledge of Disabled Students’ Allowances is desirable
  • Ability to work co-operatively across all levels of the University and with external organisations is essential
  • Ability and willingness to consider new ways of working and to apply new technology is essential
  • Understanding of confidentiality / data protection issues is essential
  • Ability to work flexibly and be highly responsive when time is of the essence is essential
  • Strong organisational and administrative skills are essential
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills are essential
  • Excellent interpersonal and presentational skills are essential
  • Excellent IT skills including MS Office suite, email / internet are essential
  • BSL Level 3 is desirable
  • Experience of assessing need and providing support within Further or Higher Education is essential
  • Experience of developing and implementing awareness-raising activities is desirable
  • Knowledge of general student support-related policies and practices is essential

This role will not attract sufficient points to obtain a sponsored Tier 2 visa under the points-based immigration system, however, applications are welcome from candidates who don’t currently have the right to work in the UK, but who would be eligible to obtain a visa via another route.
