The School of Engineering and the Built Environment at Birmingham City University (UK) is seeking 2 highly qualified and ambitious candidates for positions as an Early Stage Researchers (ESR) with the aim of obtaining a PhD within the European framework of Horizon 2020 Marie Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network action H2020-MSCA-ITN-IoT4Win, (Internet of Thing for Smart Water Innovative Network). Grant Agreement 765921

The research project IoT4Win focuses on advanced sensors and IoT technology for water and environment monitoring and control. IoT4Win will exploit the synergies between smart sensor, ICT; intelligent data processing; water distribution system knowledge and social sciences through multilateral relationships between academia, technology providers and water suppliers in the public and private sector. The successful candidate will work alongside Professor Wenyan Wu within the Centre of Engineering at BCU, UK and industrial partners from Greece, Romania and Spain. As part of the training programme of IoT4Win project you will be required to spend 18 months with our industrial partners (Singular Logic, Acing, UU) in Greece, Romania and Spain as well as the UK. You will be registered for a PhD programme at Birmingham City University and you will be expected to attend and successfully complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Research Practice.

The successful candidates will be expected to work in one of the following areas:

  • ESR1:  Design a context aware framework in heterogeneous sensor and device network for smart water distribution networks by applying a deep analysis on the necessary remote, in-situ, real-time and continuous data from monitor; cost-effective sensors, instrumentation and actuators; communication standards; communication nodes embedding; and computing operations involved.
  • ESR3:  Data intelligence and security in water management by exploring smart sensing data and IoT to enhance water security and resilience in smart water networks (SWN).

Successful candidates will receive a three year, full time employment contract with Birmingham City University in accordance with the European Commission rules for ESRs. In addition to a competitive annual salary, the successful candidate will be eligible for a mobility allowance (and a potential family allowance) under this scheme.


  • Applicants of any nationality are eligible and must comply with the European Commission, Horizon 2020 Guidelines mobility rules.
  • In particular, they must not have resided or carried out their main activity in the UK for more than 12 months of the past 36 months immediately prior to their recruitment.
  • We anticipate the candidates will start in September 2018.
  • Candidates for these positions are expected to have less than 4 years of full time equivalent research experience at the selection time and have not previously been awarded a doctoral degree.

Qualifications / experience desired:

  • The ESR will be required to undertake PhD studies, which will include an expectation to fully engage with the doctoral programme and requisite monitoring and progression process.
  • The ESR must satisfy all the academic and experimental requirements to allow enrolment and successful completion of a PhD programme.
  • A valid English language qualification, such as International English Language Test System (Academic IELTS) or equivalent with an overall score of 6.5 with no band below 6.0, must be submitted with your application.
  • MSc or equivalent professional or research experience in Electronic, Computer Science, Control Engineering, and Electrical Engineering, Applied Mathematics or closely related fields and have knowledge of sensor technology and wireless sensor network, communication and IoT technology.
  • It is desirable that applicants have relevant industrial experience and academic publication record. Applications for these two roles must include a research proposal that is aligned with the topic of the project and present the candidate‘s approach to the problem at the link for application submission.
