Research Assistant - (Environmental Engineering and Biotechnology Research Group)

This role will build upon on existing expertise in the Centre for Resilient Environments and specifically the Environmental Engineering and Biotechnology research group. This group has developed a portfolio of high quality research projects. These projects respond to the technical, economic and social challenges surrounding the use of integrated low carbon technologies and processes. It is intended that the successful applicant will have research expertise specifically related to chemical or biochemical engineering and preferably in relation to bioenergy.

The successful candidate will be responsible for ongoing research and development in the areas of bioenergy and biofuels with a specific emphasis on utilisation of novel feedstocks (such as micro and macro algae) in anaerobic digestion. Working alongside other team members to deliver high quality research data pertaining to the characterisation of biomass, pre-treatment and conversion to biogas using small scale and bench scale technologies.

 This position offers a great opportunity to work within an established and reputable research group who have a portfolio of high value projects both academic and commercial. This particular role will enable the successful candidate to work on operational pilot and full scale technologies and build networks with both academic and industrial partners.

 The successful candidate will be qualified (or expecting award of qualification) to PhD level in a relevant subject area (chemical or biochemical engineering). Knowledge and experience of biomass analysis and biochemical conversion is essential and a good understanding of the bioenergy sector, processes and technologies is preferable.

 Laboratory based experience of biomass handling and analysis are critical. Analysis will include organic and inorganic parameters as well as physical characteristics. Experience with working with external partners and full-scale operators will be essential.

 The successful candidate will be able to work collaboratively within and academic environment have excellent data evaluation, communication and presentation skills and will be able to develop scientific quality reports and peer reviewed publications.
