Finding Vacancies

Our current vacancies are listed on this website and can be viewed by the type of role, e.g. Academic, campus location, full-time/part-time and if you wish to see all current vacancies, you can select the option to view them all.

How To Apply

If you are interested in a post, click the Apply Online button within the job advert and you’ll be asked to register and set up an account on the site (Why do I have to register?) or log into the account you’ve already created. Be sure to provide an email address you use regularly, because that’s how we’ll keep in touch with you about your application.

If you require the application form in an alternative format e.g. large print; audio etc. please submit a request, via email, to RTinbox@bcu.ac.uk

All applications must be submitted, online, by 11.59 pm UK time on the closing date in the advert unless otherwise stated.

Application Form

The online application form can be completed in stages and you can login/logout at any time. The form automatically saves as you enter your information and it is simple to move backwards and forwards within the form at any time prior to submission. Help is available at each stage to guide you through the form.

Before final submission, you can preview your application and can then choose to refine or submit the form.

After Applying

Once you have submitted your application, you will see in the 'My Applications' area, that the status of your application will be "submitted" and it will also show the date of submission.

The following day, you will receive an acknowledgment email.

After Closing Date

The selection panel will assess all applicants against the requirements of the job description and person specification and then notify People & Culture of their decision.

People & Culture will then contact the applicants as appropriate.

Guidance for Candidates on the Use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Applications

At Birmingham City University (BCU) we recognise that Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools can be valuable resources that may help applicants present their knowledge, skills and experience more clearly when used appropriately.

This may be particularly helpful for applicants with disabilities that affect their ability to communicate effectively. In these circumstances, the appropriate use of AI to support the preparation of application forms, supporting statements and other written elements of the recruitment process is acceptable and aligned with our Disability Confident commitments.

However, inappropriate use of AI will be considered a breach of BCU’s values and expectations of applicants. Where there is reasonable evidence that AI has been used inappropriately, the University reserves the right to reject the application.

General Advice for Applicants

While AI can be a useful tool when applying for a vacancy, the University values the individuality and authenticity of applicants and potential colleagues.

Your application should always be an honest and accurate reflection of your own knowledge, skills and experience. If you use AI tools to help structure or refine your responses, you should ensure that the final submission reflects your own voice and experience.

Application Forms

Responses that are generic or not supported by clear examples of your knowledge, skills and experience are unlikely to score highly during shortlisting and may result in your application not being shortlisted for interview.

Candidates invited to interview may also be asked to discuss or expand on information provided in their application form to demonstrate their personal knowledge and experience.

Appropriate Use of AI

Applicants may use AI to support their application in the following ways:

  • Improving the structure and clarity of their written responses
  • Checking spelling, grammar and readability
  • Refining language while retaining the applicant’s original meaning
  • Researching the role, the University and the skills required for the position

Inappropriate Use of AI

Applicants must not use AI for the following purposes:

  • Submitting responses that are not an accurate reflection of their own knowledge, skills, experience or achievements
  • Misrepresenting or exaggerating previous experience
  • Submitting application responses that are substantially or entirely produced by AI
  • Providing AI tools with confidential or sensitive information relating to Birmingham City University

Use of AI in Selection Processes

Applicants may use AI to prepare for the selection process, for example by:

  • Researching the role, department or University
  • Practising potential interview questions
  • Receiving guidance on interview techniques or how to structure responses

However, AI must not be used during the live selection process, unless:

  • Its use has been explicitly permitted by BCU as part of the assessment process, or
  • It has been agreed in advance as a reasonable adjustment related to a disability.

Examples of inappropriate use may include:

  • Using AI tools during remote or in-person interviews to generate responses
  • Using real-time AI prompts during assessments
  • Reading from AI-generated answers during virtual interviews or presentations

Verification of Information

Where there is reason to believe that an application may contain AI-generated responses, the selection panel may explore these areas further during the interview process to ensure the information provided accurately reflects the applicant’s knowledge and experience.
